Deadwood - TV Show

“I am at my stoopidist when I try to be funny”

God damn I love this show. Even finding Bullock more bearable this time around, hair trigger maniac, love how quickly he loses his temper

I’m doing the same and at the same point. When they beat them in the street it is just brutal.

Why the previous dislike for Bullock? He’s not actually got that much screen time in season 1, at least compared to what I remember.

Yep it's brutal as fuck. But it's worse when she's sat in the chair and he's mocking her brain damage but she keeps trying to come at him. Excellent performance.

Bullock - I guess I find him two dimensional compared to the others. I am enjoying it a lot more now as I can appreciate the suppressed rage and the inabiility to communicate with people  can't imagine why ... but it's relentless. He occasionally has that winning smile and it was nice when he was with Hicock but again it felt like a really paper thin character, even the way he walks is so incredibly forced. I didn't rate him as an actor at all until I saw the movies I mentioned and I realised just how great he can be when he's let off the leash. Thing is I know S2 is even harder work as that relationship is kind of ponderous.... but I don't care, I need to get to S3, maybe the best series of tv I've ever seen

The committee episode is frankly genius satire. I always loved the creeping insidious politics but to step so comfortably from killing injuns and panhandling to sitting around a table in a boring meeting wondering why the fuck you are there with bad food laid on is just amazing

Great that I just signed up to Now on a 3 month deal for GoT.  About just enough time for a rewatch before end of May.  I guess the delay between the States and here isn’t that long for HBO shows usually, right?

Is it getting a cinema release?

Al doesn’t look any different!

just watching another episode. EB’s soliloquies are amazing, it’s like a sweary shakespeare, even more now he has that weird old helper to riff off

@linkster How far through are you now? I'm still on track to finish before the movie is out, just at the end of season two. It is still top tier, but it is missing something the first and third have somehow.

The throat cutting was absolutely horrific

Also commenced rerun on this. It's even better than I remember.

I'm really liking Bullocks character much more as well. Although your right his walk is a bit funny.

So many great scenes, so many great lines.

Starting a rewatch ahead of the film release, even though I could act it, you limber dicked cocksuckers.

No, no, you’re getting confused. ‘Limber dicked cocksuckers’ is a line from the gay porn parody called Bigwood.

Are you fucking kidding me? The most famous movie cowboy of all time walked like he was permanently trying to crack a walnut with his arse cheeks!  Olyphant is a catwalk model in comparison!

I'm just working my way through Deadwood again before watching the film. Fuck me I forgot just how amazing the writing is. Every character lights up the screen with the quality of the character and their dialogue - from Al's speeches to Bullock's simmering anger, EB's self pity and of course Jane's outbursts - I'm frequently laughing out loud at her.

It's amazing.

Busy doing exactly the same here. Only watched it the once before, and obviously quite some time ago, and I'd slightly forgotten just how good it is. I'd also misremembered Al as a bit more of a loveable rogue than the Machiavellian psychopath that he really is.

Some of the bits I do recall a bit more clearly actually improve the second viewing though. All of the scenes with the reverend are rather more tinged with melancholy, for example, knowing what comes later. And of course Sy rolling into town early on - and Al's paranoia about all the new arrivals - is a wonderful moment too, when you already know how significant that all is.

Is it another inaccurate recollection or does the language get much more elaborate in the later seasons? Haven't got there yet, but I seem to remember struggling with some of it towards the end, because it was practically Shakespearian dialogue by then.

I think some of it gets a bit more elaborate with the Gothic Shakespeare-esque soliloquies - damn but I saw a really good summary of the writing style only yesterday and can't remember it - but there's nothing crazily complicated and by having more idea what's going on I can generally follow it easily enough now. I thought the movie lacked some of that, it's toned back down which maybe fit the general softening of most of the inhabitants after the years have passed.

Nah, the writing in the movie is tighter. For a start there was none of that acting troupe nonsense, which was the absolute nadir of the main show.

oh it's definitely more focused - I think series' of this era quite often ran sub-plots so they had threads to spin out if/when they got renewed - but the language itself in the dialogue. Goddamn, it's annoying me that I can't remember where that summary was. By series 3 some of the stuff Al/Hearst/E.B./Doc came out with was phenomenal, but takes a bit of concentration to follow at times.

yeah, E.B's rants to himself in that weird cupboard he lives in made shakespear look like holyoaks

The one where the guy spits on his face and tells E.B not to wipe it off until he returns is amazing. E.B just ranting as it slowly trickled down his face...

Ah man, EB kills me every time. But yeah, we could trade quotes from the show all day, Milch is a genius for dialogue.
