Resident Evil 4 Remake reportedly underway... that interest ya?

Recommended Posts

That has got me thinking I may try the older resident evil games on emulation.

I only ever played it through the once on the Gamecube. Just feels like a GC game to me in my memory so have't tried it on any of the others. I should maybe give another format a chance. Would like to go back and try that PC HD mod once it's finally out. QTEs, though. Yay or nay?

Imagine what RE4R is really going to be like, though. What they could do to make it better. One of the more memorable scenes is when you're stuck in the house near the beginning and the villagers start coming through the window. Imagine how they could improve on that great bit in RE4R. The bit where the villagers come through the window. Imagine.

Hope they get rid of the escorting aspect, doubt it though. RE4 was like a lot of different filler bits bolted together, will be easy to slim it down to an 8hr playthrough. You can remove a lot of bits without affecting the story at all.

Minecart, giant digging truck sections come to mind

Yes, as someone playing RE4 as we speak, I fully agree. The button mashing sections or escort parts haven't been fun and felt like filler bits. Should be removed.

The only bit of RE4 that out stayed its welcome a bit was the castle section. Everything else was straight up thrills. And if anything the lake and swamp sections weren't long enough. Talk of cutting Ashley and the mine cart section is just insane malevolence. I create my own neg system to counter your potty mouths. All of you get (X)

I don't remember the digging machine section so it can't have been that bad. You get (X)

Resident Evil 4 has bad bits now? Bits that need trimming? My god!  You people are crazy!

If Resident Evil 4 had never existed and someone released it today with a bundled peripheral that acted as a gun pointer (like the Wii remote in the Wii version), the game would be GOTY, no question.

I played RE4 only a month or two ago. First time since it was first released.

after 2” mins or so getting used to the controls, it was an absolute joy from start to finish.

not an ounce of fat or filler tagged onto it at all.

Saying that, it would be great if they did a new mode where the entire game could be played with modern controls so Leon can move and aim at the same time + there were more enemies on screen or they are faster. The whole game would be a mad scramble to survive.

I don’t think you understand what made RE4 good at all. Nobody gives a shit about what’s relevant to the ‘story’, for starters.

There’s nothing fanboy about it, you’ve just spent pages wittering on about completely irrelevant stuff. I don’t think the remake will resemble the original in any meaningful way regardless.

RE4 did the escort mission better than anything out there at the time. It's probably still one of the best at it as well.

Nah. I just beat it after playing it for the first time. It's a good game but does have its flaws. The story is shit, Salazar is a poor villain, the jet ski bit in the end is absolutely unnecessary and poorly implemented, the QTE sequences are questionable at best.

And that's all because

It reeks of 17yr old game design

Resi 4 design philosophy was incongruous for the time, and was criticised for it iirc, it just happened that all of it's parts were individually excellent so it got a pass.

It's a little like the croc, snake, moths in the original games - throwing a bunch of set piece bosses at you which don't make much sense in terms of world-building. Eg. El Gigante, Del Lago, Verdugo ( which I'd totally forgotten about), Salazar... the remake team ethos seems to prioritise world-building and removing outlandish elements. So I hope Salazar & Sandler get a heavy re-design, because they need it. And that silly statue will be one of the first things to go. I have stated this in a previous post, so I ask for tolerance from anyone sensitive to some mild repetition.

I feel like James Franco in the 'Comedy Central Roast of James Franco' (2013) right now.

I’ve always enjoyed the silliness of Resident Evil, the dafter the better as far as I’m concerned. There’s a plethora of serious action games out there. But I appreciate that’s not for everyone.

Either way more Resident Evil is usually a good thing so I look forward to this.

They included a mic in the PS5 controller specifically to allow Capcom to include voice commands in the escort sections this time around. The only way they could be improved.

The story in all the Resident Evil games is shit. 7 aside, it's basically the exact same thin story over and over again with different main villains. Most of the games even follow the exact same arc (trying to contain the virus in a 'normal' location before eventually turning into a boring run around a characterless secret lab). It's to Resident Evil 4's strength that it doesn't care whether a giant statue or a random room full of lava or a mine cart ride or a room full of lasers or arbitrary shooting galleries and merchants hang together as a coherent story or not.

I agree the remake will probably care a lot more about the story and believability and will likely lean in a lot harder on the horror elements but that won't necessarily make it better, just different.

I think story-wise there's a fine line between "there's a virus outbreak and we need to investigate the police station" to "there is a tiny pirate in a castle and a gigantic stone statue that can walk and suddenly there's Krauser too, and an island and...".

Resident Evil was one of the first games to have a proper plot though - the lab was a surprise. Plus it had subtle branching for each character, with a variety of satisfying outcomes (RIP Barry) and even a fairly well orchestrated twist (the Japanese delivery masked the obviously telegraphed villain on the first run). Metal Gear Solid outdid it a couple of years later, but I'd say both were sophisticated actions games of their time.

You could make a decent self-contained b-movie out of the first Resident Evil game - and I don't quite know why this hasn't happened.

But I think you'd struggle with the sequels without heavy reworking.

I love the classic Resident Evil formula when it's done well. Nest2 was not done well.

You might want rephrase that to be more specific. Because as it stands it's laughably incorrect. I have no idea what you're trying to say.
