The Official Rllmuk Awards 2019 & Games of the Decade - VOTING CLOSED

Recommended Posts

One of those years when pretty much everything played gets on the list.  GotD are rock solid and only include games finished, usually multiple times. I put Prey as number one because it is probably the single most enjoyable and clever game I've played, at least for ages.  All the others have their moments too, particularly playing the great Infinite Engine RPGs on your favourite console and the novelty of having a 5 CD game downloaded onto a tablet is something I still have to pinch myself about from time to time (but apparently it's not allowed to include Baldur's gate on iOS which is odd given it's a revised version).  The vote for Witcher 3 is as much for the world as the quests and story line - there is nothing which comes close to replicating the detailed activity and the inclusion of children helps greatly too with this.

I am woefully, embarrassingly behind current-gen (and even last-gen) gaming: I don't have a PS4, Xbox One, or Switch (or even a Wii U), and have played nothing released this year. But at least I can fill my games of the decade list with some Xbox 360 and older PC games!

And I think I can make a pretty good stab at who was the best gaming character of this and most other years...

This was a slightly disappointing year, in that not a whole lot of must have games were released. From a cursory glance at my completed games list, 9 were released this year and two of those were ports of old mobile phone ports of 30 year old games (Dragon Quest I & II - which I assume aren't eligible?).

Anyhow lists below, will look to add some comments in due course.

Game of the Year

A1. The Outer Wilds.

Taking a bit of a gamble with this one as I haven't actually finished it yet, but I like it when games do something new with their storytelling and this does that and then some. It's so good I don't really understand why it's good, but the exciting multiple breadcrumb trail Rumour map is certainly part of it. Great atmosphere and music, too.

A2. Gears 5

Takes a franchise I love and makes it better. It's been a cracking laugh cooping through with a mate in what is undoubtedly the best Gears campaign.

A3. Astral Chain

Platinum's most expansive, bravest, probably best game.

A4. Luigi's Mansion 3

A5. Super Mario Maker 2

Biggest Disappointment of the Year (game, hardware, or anything else)

Z1. Sekrio: Shadows Die Twice

It's me it's not you, Sekrio broke my hands, a controller and made my anxiety flare up like nothing. It was just a bit too intense, and when it wore out the RB on my Elite controller I traded it in and moved on.

Z2. The Outer Worlds

I liked it, I didn't love it. It started brilliantly but became a pretty massive trudge as it went on.

Z3. Borderlands 3's script. Awful, childish shite. Made the game a genuine annoyance despite having superb gameplay.

Ok, ok, stop fretting everyone, I'm here with my list!

Game of the Year

A1. Ace Combat 7

"No other shooter mixes arcade thrills with sim-lite spills quite so well; a triumphal Gran Turismo of the skies, with gnarly weapons and sleek fighter jet garage porn."

A2. Gears 5

"As dumb as all get-out, number 5 is alive with campy melodrama and righteous gibbing. It's 80s/90s militarism - think Operation Wolf/Cabal - in 3D with a Heinlein sci-fi skin, and immensely enjoyable"

A3. Katana Zero

"It took thirty years, but we finally have the Ninja Spirit/Gaiden (delete your least favourite as appropriate) sequel we deserved."

A4. Control

"To remind yourself why games often have abstract, word salad titles, try Googling 'Control'. Poor nomenclature aside, Control is inconsistent both technically and artistically but won me over with its commitment to a pastel hued, Escher-like weirdness and an intriguingly outre plot."

A5. Devil Engine

"The best new horizontal shooter since Dariusburst, this is a juiced Mega Drive hori with a nifty evasion mechanic, and more than a bit of roid rage."

Biggest Disappointment of the Year (game, hardware, or anything else)

Z1. Blizzard / Blitzchung

"US-based company decides to support a decision completely against democratic principles simply because of the cha-ching. Gross."

Z2. Gambling and loot boxes

Z3. Six month wait for PC Death Stranding

"FFS"

Z4.

Z5.

Sound Design of the Year

S1.Resident Evil 2

"[spookiness intensifies]"

S2.Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

"Pew and, indeed, pew"

S3.

Visual Design of the Year

V1.Ghost Giant

"Richard Scarry vs. Laika... fight! Beautiful papercraft design in a VR game no-one has heard of."

V2.Luigi's Mansion 3

"The best thing about this series has always been the cute, atmospheric visuals, and with ambient occlusion and bloom for days, this one's the loveliest."

V3.Daemon x Machina

"A mech game with cel shading? Please and thank you."

Writing of the Year

W1.Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

"Manages to tell a coherent and engaging story [insert dig at Hollywood's poor attempts here]"

W2.

W3.

Gaming Format (System) of the Year

F1.PC

"Games supporting RTX arrived, VR excelled (Half Life: Alyx is coming!) and the killer: Xbox Game Pass dropped on Windows."

Publisher or Developer of the Year

P1.Nintendo

Best Supported Game (released pre 2019) of the Year

B1.

Your game of the year that didn't come out this year (basically what is your favourite game you played this year that came out in 2018 or earlier)

X1. Shinobi (1987)

Best game character of the year

C1.Goose

C2.Luigi

C3.

And the big one:

Game of the Decade

D1.The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

D2.Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

D3.Astro Bot

"If you had to talk someone into the worth of VR with the fiddly setup, the space you need to prevent wanging your hands against furniture, the awkwardness of wires, the sweatiness of the headset... that all this faff would be worthwhile? Let them play this game, and let its unadulterated joy seep into their very marrow. The best new IP of the generation, the best PSVR game to date, and the best platform game of the decade."

D4.Super Mario 3D Land

"Pipping 3D World to the post due to its superior level design, Mario's handheld adventure reminds us that weaker consoles can triumph over their larger cousins. The third dimension is no gimmick either, with depth becoming part of the platforming experience. The best Mario game of the decade? It's not exactly a weak field but, even so, yes it is."

D5.Rock Band 3

"Fair do's, franchise fatigue had well and truly set in by the time RB3 rocked (hah!) up, which is such a shame as it's arguably the single best main line game; definitely the greatest all-rounder. I still cling to my guitars (yes, plural) and drum kit, despite them taking up the space equivalent to a small island nation."

D6.DOOM (2016)

"Pushes out Halo: Reach as FPS of the decade by virtue of its relentlessness in the pursuit of fun. It will switch between silly, intimidating and spectacular at a flick-book pace to keep you energised, turning the experience into an arcade action marvel. Unreconstructed pleasure."

D7.Portal 2

"Blah blah lightning can't strike twice blah blah, but putting the original game out of mind as much as possible, the tension, the humour and - yes - the puzzles in this sequel ensure it's a classic in every sense of the word."

D8.The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

"Nintendo have got this handheld lark sewn-up completely, yeah? A game that utilises every last iota of power and the feature set of the 3DS, Link Between Worlds is a late-lifecycle marvel that's fascinating, intelligent and gorgeous without ever becoming tiring or over-complicated. It's pure Nintendo magic."

D9.Journey

"All the feels. ALL THE GODDAMN FEELS."

D10.Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

"Found Sekiro too hard? Want something more like Bayonetta but with actual bayonets (well, vibro-swords. PoTAYto, poTAHto)? Then Rising is for you! In all seriousness, although MGR is messy (the camera turns against you almost as often as the adversaries) the core Platinum game play experience is hella satisfying. Underrated and semi-forgotten, but for me? A classic. Why? Nanomachines, son!!!"

I only played 1 really good original game this year so...

1. Luigi's Mansion 3 (loved it).

Games of the Decade:

1. Bloodborne

(Went to bed dreaming about it).

2. Dark Souls

(I agree with Darwock. Demon's Souls is better but I loved this too).

3. Star Wars Battlefront

(played it a silly amount of hours)

4. BotW

(No game has encouraged experimental approaches better).

5. Horizon: Zero Dawn

(An open world game with a fantastic story for a change).

6. Arkham City

(Asylum was better but this was wonderful too).

7. Celeste

(Seemed to pitch everything just right).

8. Rogue Legacy

(Still playing it. Crack)

9. PUBG

(I'm terrible at it but I enjoyed hiding in the toilet a lot).

10. Skyrim

(Played it twice over. Sort of took over my life for a bit).

Astrobot and Superhot just failed to get in but they are the future.

@Mawdlin please specify the version of Battlefront. Star Wars Battlefront came out in 2004 and is not valid. If you mean Star wars Battlefront II that is valid but you must specify. I need the full names of games in the lists or it's a pain to collate the votes. Ta.

This goes for other voters: it says please use full game names in the rules, please follow that.

I had to put PES Series in amongst my games of the decade. I couldn't pick a year in good faith. Is there any other way to deal?

Game series are not valid entries. If you put a series instead of one game I will either not be able to count the vote or I will pick a random valid entry from the series.

Votes for "Mario Kart" can therefore end up counting as votes for the mobile version of the game because I am vindictive and cruel.

In fairness, Mawdlin likely has given the full title and means Star Wars Battlefront, which came out in 2015, and shouldn't be confused with Star Wars: Battlefront, which came out in 2004. Not the easiest series to keep track of.
