Football Thread 2019/2020

So wierd that the game seemed to have calmed down, but the second half ended up being just as high scoring as the first. There were two 20-odd minute spells with no goals - which I suppose wouldn't be worth remarking on in most games. Then Coutinho comes on and they ship three more. It's was as if Bayern had somehow managed to sub on a 12th man.

Also, dear lord did Bayern's Canadian left back look good or what? He's going to have Sane playing in front of his next season, that ought to be some combination.

Just goes to show that Messi has probably wasted his prime at Barcelona and should have moved on when Pep did.

Absolutely. Only five league titles, four Spanish cups and a Champions League in the time since Pep left. It’s been a disaster if you think about it.

I think he would have been happier with Ronaldo’s return of four Champions Leagues in the same period though.

Quite possibly, but there’s no guarantee he’d have won the Champions League more than the one time he did manage it had he left Barcelona. It’s a notoriously difficult competition to win and plenty of incredibly expensively assembled squads have failed to win it.  Messi still has four winners medals (06*, 09, 11, 15) which is a hell of a haul in this era.  Some people will think he should have won it every year because he’s Leo Messi but football just doesn’t work like that.

*out injured for the final but he played in the groups and knockouts.

Barcelona pissing away with the Neymar money makes the players Spurs signed with the Bale money look sensible.

That's a step too far.

Being reported that Barcelona will owe Liverpool £4.5m, should Coutinho go on to win the competition with Bayern. No way to verify this of course but it's a fun story, so the press is just going with it.

Really impressed with Lyon in the first half.  They've contained Manchester City relatively easily, KDB has shown a couple of flashes of brilliance but City's system is failing to cut through Lyon, and Lyon have the ability to break really well.  Their goal was a hell of a finish.

I can't see it being long before Guardiola makes some changes, dunno who he swaps out but to me it looks like the game is screaming for someone like Mahrez who can beat a man and shoot from distance because this trying to walk the ball into the net (well, to try and shoot from 12 yards) seems to be something Lyon can totally deal with.

It’s only really in England where loan players can’t play against their parent clubs, and if memory serves that’s only because Lua Lua scored a last minute goal for Pompey against Newcastle (his parent club) and everybody had a bloody good laugh about it.

City's whole thing the last few seasons has been playing two very creative midfielders - usually De Bruyne and David silva - in the two most advanced midfield positions. It's pretty odd that we're at this stage of the game and he's still not reverted to the familiar. Pep's got three players on the bench who could change the game for him and he's using none of them.
