Konami announces mini PC Engine & Turbografx

Recommended Posts

Six titles have been announced so far for North America/Europe:

R-Type

Ys Book I & II

New Adventure Island

Ninja Spirit

Alien Crush

Dungeon Explorer

The Japanese version, meanwhile, has an almost entirely different set of games:

Bonk’s Adventure

Dracula X

The Kung Fu/China Warrior

Ys I & II

Super Star Soldier

Dungeon Explorer

Interestingly, Ys and Dracula X are CD-ROM games, meaning we could be seeing more titles not just from the Turbografx-16, but the TurboGrafx-CD as well.

Played the odd game on emulators, but have never even seen a PC Engine IRL - so in for this.. :)

*Highly* interested

HDMI is a given, as long as the emulation is good I'll grab one. M2 is hopefully handling that side. They were involved with konamis recent retro collections I'd read. If it's hacked, it's a no brainer given their scarcity and cost in the UK

I wonder if the models region restricted - e.g. the PC Engine only being released in Japan, the TurboGrafx being North America and the Core Grafx.. hmmm... wasn't that Japan only?

Seems strange to release three physical form factors when I don't think anyone is hankering for a TurboGrafx form factor (seeing as the US market issues with the PC Engine is so ironic now).

Quote

In 1988 NEC wanted to sell the system to the American market, and directed its U.S. operations to do so. NEC Technologies boss Keith Schaefer formed a team to test the system out. One criticism they found was the lack of enthusiasm in its name 'PC Engine'. The team also felt its small size was not very suitable to American consumers who would generally prefer a larger and "futuristic" design. As a result they came up with the name 'TurboGrafx-16', a name representing its graphical speed and strength, and its 16-bit

Very interested in this with no easy access to the hardware over here outside of paying 500+ when I've looked on eBay. But excluding Rondo of Blood, the BEST GAME ON THE SYSTEM to everyone else outside Japan is lunacy.

its a marketing move to double their money

look at the megadrive mini, Yu Yu Hakusho (and 6 button pads) are only available in the Japanese version!

instead of me getting the system i want for £80, i have to buy both and give them £160

I'd be willing to bet that at least Bonk's Adventure, Dracula X and Super Star Soldier will be on the non-Japanese versions (likewise, R-Type, New Adventure Island on the Japanese version).

Here's a list of PC Engine games released via Wiiware in the USA

Localising Yu Yu Hakusho for western audiences makes zero sense though.

As for Dracula X - localising that would be a tonne of very labour intensive work too.

If M2 is involved than crazy stuff like that is the company's bread and butter.

My concern is that M2 has been hard at work on the Mega Drive Mini meaning At Games is working on this.

As the PS Mini has proved, systems like this live and die by their emulation (and game selection) so it's going to be interesting to see what develops in coming months.

I'm also convinced that we're getting Rondo as well, despite claims from Konami saying otherwise.

Apart from the title screen, does anything else need localised (here's the US Wiiware version)

I'd imagine that localising Dracula X's FMV sequences, credits and numerous audio samples might fall well outside of the remit for this thing - but I did completely forget about the Wii VC release.

There might even be some hope for the awesome Supergrafx Ghouls 'n Ghosts port being snuck in.
