This looks like a lot of fun, I'm in! Couldn't help but feel like I was watching a Deadpool-stuck-in-Pikachu-form movie trailer though ;)

It's probably because it's touched a generation of adults who've grown up with classic Pokémon and now have that nostalgia. I still can't believe this is the first ever live-action Pokémon thing, though.

Unconnected to this, my wife's just got back into Pokémon and we've been watching the cartoons on Netflix. There's something fascinating how they bring the Pokémon out of the battle arena to interact with humans so there's no doubt there's a grain of a good idea in there that led to this movie.

They should go full meta. Have a shot showing the back of Pikachu and have him sound like Danny Devito, then an 'extras' character played by Danny Devito playing an car mechanic or something  slides out from under a car and you realize it was him, not Pikachu. Just this random little meta moment.

They were really smart going the cat/puss in boots angle with Pikachu, that allied to current fur tech is just a massive win. It's impossible to look at that trailer and not go "Awwwwwww" at least once.

I have a habit of watching reaction videos these days because seeing people get joy from something is the one of the few ways can cope with this maelstrom of shit that we call modern life and I've learned that the millennial YouTube generation are basically going to give this thing ALL of their money.

The deep lore and references that you see throughout the trailer point to two things:

1) The Pokémon Company(and thus GameFreak) are very involved with this.

2) The production itself is littered with people who are genuine fans of the whole thing, and if not have invested serious time in getting it right. That Mr. Mime barrier gag in particular reads that way.

It tickles me that this probably makes even less sense to people who don't know the Pokemon games. Why are there all these weird animals around? Why does the this one talk? Why is there a cartoon mime?

I'm hoping it doesn't tie itself in knots trying to explain the whole concept and just goes with it.

Jury's out on the humans, though. This has the risk of turning into a generic YA movie with comedy animals on the side.

I wouldn't worry about needing to explain it to the 5 people who don't know what Pokemon is ;)

My 11 year old was trying to tell me how big Fortnite is and it is the biggest thing ever. I kept telling hi, it has a looooong way to go to match Pokemon levels. He couldn't believe the YouTube numbers on the trailer or why his 37 year old father was giddy with excitement.

Still a few months until this is out, but they've already started working on a sequel. Being written by Oren Uziel, who did 22 Jump Street, Cloverfield Paradox and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. I'm trying to keep a straight face.
