I’ve always been quite fond of force 10 from

I watched that again recently, it was on 5 I think. It's ok but not a patch on the original imo. The TV version jump cut with the piano wire always annoys me!

A Bridge too Far is another really enjoyable WW2 movie.

The Pianist

Downfall

Army of Shadows

Das Boot

The Thin Red Line

But seriously if you've never seen Band of Brothers watch that.

"Went the Day Well?"

A great film by Ealing Studios, which also happens to be a fascinating piece of propaganda as it was released slap bang in the middle of the war, in 1942: the movie is extremely confident of victory over Hitler, although it never shies away from the psychological impact of the villagers having to defend our green and pleasant land from the nazis. Jack Higgins pinched some bits from it for his book The Eagles Has Landed, which of course became a film as well. I prefer "Went the Day Well?" if only for the fact that we get to see a young Thora Hird shoot a few nazis. In parts, it feels a little bit like an alternate version of Dad's Army, one in which the Germans actually invade.

I love the opening as well...

Most of my favourites already mentioned but you could try:

Cross of Iron - The war on the Eastern front from the German perspective.

Enemy at the Gates - The Battle for Stalingrad from a Russian perspective.

Generation War - Not a film but a superb German mini series which follows 5 young Germans (3 men and 2 Women) from 1941 just before Germany invades Russia and they are winning the war all the way through to defeat in 1945.

Bit of a theme there in terms of seeing the war from a non western view point.

Oh and Casablanca which is an all time classic.

If you want something military then Das Boot, Lawrence of Arabia, or The Thin Red Line.

For something non-military, then then I would suggest Downfall, Casablanca, Schindler's List or Grave of the Fireflies.

Saving Private Ryan for your standard depiction of WWII.

The Train if you want something slightly different with Burt Lancaster being an absolute badass. Its a tense spy thriller with some amazing looking action which is super impressive when you consider when it was made.
