Halo Infinite - Q? 2021

Recommended Posts

Apparently one of the community managers tweeted about sending the team love because crunch has been brutal, and that was a guy who was at Bungie for the Halo 2 death march, so...

I’ve not been able to find the tweet to verify, though.

I don’t think the tiny bit of the level we saw is all they’ve done on it.

Of course not. But nearly every aspect of what we did see was massively unfinished. Levitating debris, comical animations, garbage LOD, Xbox-era modeling, poor texturing... God knows what else was garbled underneath the hood.

For comparison take a look at the Cyberpunk 2077 footage from just over two years ago.

The ones Harsin mentions, plus whatever third parties deliver, plus everything on Gamepass. Absolutely loads to play.

Well I’m sure CD Projeckt Red are pleased that their game is going to feature in a lot more of the advertising campaign now.

But Tetris is on ye olde xbox one which just leaves I Can't Believe It's Not Aliens and NOT Silent Hill: A XXX Porn Parody. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence or make me want to open my wallet.

This console has no wow factor at launch and that's a huge issue with regards to public perception.

I thought Digital Foundry said the only issue with the Halo Infinite reveal was merely a lighting issue due to the time of day and something to do with shadoooows. So why the delay? Should be a simple fix.

Could it be DF were talking absolute bollocks and were trying to hand-wave away major issues with the reveal after "Uncle" Phil gave them a call to help out after the internet flakback®?

I’d delay the console launch if your AAA release isn’t there and there’s not a great deal to pick up the considerable slack

They're damned in that scenario because then Sony would have well and truly got their feet under the table by the time the XSX released and it would look like old news. Continuing to release with the current extremely barebones lineup ain't great, but it's the least bad option.

After the Master Chief Collection debacle, Halo 5 not being very warmly received and now this, you have to imagine Bonnie Ross is frantically updating LinkedIn and polishing up her CV.

And then send the message that it's not all about compatibility after all? They've gone too far down the road to do that.

I said to a pal after the gameplay demo that if that was the best they could show, then god only knows what state the rest of it was in. Guess we know. I've no doubt it's the right decision for the game and the team, but for the console? Yeesh.

I wonder if the plan is still to keep it playable on the Xbox One - if so, there’s only so much they can do for it looks wise you’d think.

Which means there must have been much more serious problems to necessitate this delay - I think the consensus was that although the graphics weren’t great and not the best showcase for a super powerful console, they were still acceptable for a cross-gen open world game with a high frame rate.

an xbox launching without a Halo game?

not actually unusual

It would have been fitting though, for the narrative. A callback, almost.

Like Mario being absent for GC and Wii launch and triumphantly returning with the Wii U. Hmm, not a favourable comparison there.

Oh they’re going to launch the console in November, otherwise we’d never have known that Halo wouldn’t be ready, we’d have been given a line that the console was Covid impacted and moving back to Q1 2021.

the message about compatibility needn’t have been compromised, put it all on a console delay.

its a big blow for the XSX launch right when recession is about to strike. Yeesh indeed

I get what you're saying in that NSMBU wasn't quite as exciting as a full-fat 3D Mario, but it was still great, and sold near 6 million copies (not including the eventual Switch port).

Xbox could be doing with money-hatting an opportunity even just half as lucrative as NSMBU right now. This exclusives problem has indeed been a problem for a long while.

I don't think Infinite can be saved. You can't polish a turd.

You can. You just end up with loads of turd and polish on your hands.

No, but you can roll it in glitter (Ray Tracing).

Stillborn console. Another disaster of a gen incoming for MS. They should probably give up and forget about gaming, they just don’t get it.

Oh I agree, I specifically deleted mention of NSMBU from the post so it was more explicitly about the console. :)

If this ends up being late 2021 they should probably ditch the Xbox One support and go all-in with the Series S/X's full potential.

Less Craig, more Cena. That kind of thing.
