I was there for that; I don’t think there was one person there not applauding that lap.

You lucky lucky sod. That was Schumi doing what he does best - wring the neck of a weak package and still come out on top at the drivers’ circuit

only ever saw him in the flesh once, qualifying for the British GP in 2003. He binned it at Luffield and had to walk back to the pits so we had a nice long look

You quoting Ferrari management?

Zing.

Imagine your Camilleri for a second. You've got total control over Ferrari, you can do whatever you want. You are watching the team lose the championship despite having the best car for the lions share of the season so far. What do you do?  Do you change the team building the car again? Why would you, it's working just fine. What about strategy? Yeah there are improvements to be made, but not the type that can make a huge difference and a statement.

What do you do, to stamp your authority and begin a new for Ferrari - your era. What do you do that cements your place in Ferrari legend?

If it was me, I'd phone up Lewis and get him to name his price. Get him at any cost. Be seen as the man that returned the Scuderia wining championships again.

Well this is a total disaster:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/45558975

Formula 1's owners have signed a deal to sell sponsorship rights to betting companies.

The deal with Interregional Sports Group, reportedly worth more than $100m (£76m), will allow F1 to develop in-play betting markets during grands prix.

As part of the deal, betting brands will be shown on physical and virtual trackside signage, as well as branded on-screen graphics.

And after the moves to clean up the image, no grid girls etc.

This cheapens the sport massively. I wonder how the hyper luxury brands feel about it?

For reference of how bad this can be google the Sky bet ads and replace Jeff Stelling with Crofty.

Definitely not keen on the move at all. I fucking hate betting ads and all the bullshit Soccer Saturday LADS LADS LADS culture they're drenched in. Ugh. They're the only adverts that I actively tell YouTube to not show me again, and even doing that they still manage to creep back whenever each company shits out a new one.

Actually, the Sky Bet ads aren't the ones I find the most odious. Those would be things like the Virgin adverts that show a lot of immaculately-groomed models wearing ridiculously expensive suits enjoying a civilised and glamorous time in their live casino. Fine. Betting can be that. It can also be the 45-year old man with a 5-o-clock shadow staggering half-drunk out of Ladbrookes on Saturday evening having chucked his last tenner away and feeling like misery personified.

All true. The slide into respectablity has been building for a while, like you share a particular loathing for how betting ads are now simply everywhere

yes betting can be fun and an occasional flutter harmless, probably, just making that allowance. But then so can taking quite hard drugs. The data on one being acceptable while the other is beyond any kind of tolerance from mainstream politicians simply comes down to how well one can grease palms

F1 has always been sponsored by contemporary evils.

Cigarettes, alcohol, banks/oil, Bose and now gambling.

Could be amazing, in game joker cards allowing you to tag in Maldonado for some mid race fun or live odds on Vettel fucking it up as he tries to make up for another mistake etc!

Betting companies are pretty tame compared to F1’s past, ahh the good old days of promoting drink driving and cancer is cool...

Timely:

Quote

Labour is calling for a ban on gambling advertising during live sporting events in a bid to tackle problem gambling. It also said it would stop people using credit cards to pay for bets and introduce a levy on gambling operators to help pay for treatment.

The betting ads will be virtual, added in real time so they can be localised. This means they can also be switched off if legislation prohibits them. :bye:
