4K Blu Ray - anyone collecting?

Recommended Posts

It reminds me of off-camera behind the scenes footage. It's intriguing though, the way we have been conditioned into what film should look and feel like, when this is much closer to reality. I'm against it for the record. Despite its arbitrary origins 24fps is woven into the DNA of film for me, as much as any other part of it.

Used them once before, no complaints.

I'm only picking up Rogue One, the Skywalker Saga can fuck right off.

Zavvi just sent me an email saying a three disk steel book of a new hope is on sale tomorrow. I knew greedy disney would shortly announce single releases after the £200 box set came out.

For my sins, I watched Gemini Man in both 60fps and 24fps out of curiosity (as the film was pretty wank).

Honestly, for a film shot at 120fps, it looked better at 24fps, which is about as damning an indictment as I can give. It made me wonder whether the physical limitations of shooting at that speed had a knock on effect with the lighting and the rest of the cinematography, forcing them to over-light everything, because the whole thing has that super bright and overly saturated TV demo look (not helped by the locations and colour grade used, which bear a lot of similarities with what you see in TV demos). I thought the HFR would help the action scenes but they seemed to flow better at 24fps as well.

I assume like the Carpenter films they did, after a few months they'll release the non-fancy edition of the UHD ?

Copy of Baby Driver turned up today. Love the film so looking forward to seeing it in 4k glory.

Got Detective Pikachu and Ghost in the Shell (the ScarJo) one on the way from HMV too. Both decent prices so rude not to.

Zoom had 1917 for £19.17 over VE Day weekend so I've pre-ordered that too.

I'm up to 16 UHD discs.

Disney UK being typically shambolic with their treatment of... well, anything.

I just gave up and ordered an import, and erm ... the big box set of the saga.

I'm sure the disc will look good, but Baby Driver is definitely a 2k film.

No, Amazon.de. They had a 20% off, last week.

Coolshop don't have Rogue One.

I received this today:

One word: Avoid.

I know that most people aren't going to bother importing it anyway, due to the cost, but the amount of DNR fuckery going on here, forbids me from any sort of recommendation. The new Japanese 5.1 is also hilariously bad.

If CDJapan weren't so bloody efficient, I'd have cancelled it long before it shipped.

Of course the skywalker saga dropped to £180 as soon as I bought it.

The forums on blu-ray.com is worth nipping into. Just to read the subjects in the 4k UHD section. If something is likely coming, it'll swap out of the "wish list" posts and be in the main page.

Haven't picked up the US release of Hannibal yet, keep forgetting.

We need more Tony Scott on the format.

Frozen 2. Wow. It's incredible. Pixar 4k stuff is all good as it's animation but Frozen 2 is a phenomenal looking film.

I can't get on with that.

The image is stunning - the clarity is just exceptional. Every detail is really visible.

The increased frame rate though, to me, removes any cinematic feeling. It looks like a great demo reel for TVs in John Lewis.

It doesn't look like a movie.

It's almost like the director of photography just chose contrast - orange wall, blue car - in every shot. 60fps is wonderful for most games but for cinema, it's horrible. It might work on fast action scenes.

I saw Age of Ultron at the cinema and the end fight with all the robots flying around was too fast and busy - it could work there or for super slo-mo stuff but that shift could take you out of the film.

If they applied this to something like The Good The Bad and The Ugly, it would look horrible.

I've often (well once), could Pixar re-render their stuff at 4K, 8K, etc.?

They re-rendered all of the Toy Story movies for their 3D re-releases so probably, if there's felt to be a need for it.

My collection of 4k blurays is fairly limited as I tend to just buy stuff digitally for the convenience.

So far, I've got:

Avenger's Endgame

Jurassic World

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom

Star Wars the Last Jedi

Thor Ragnarok

Warcraft

I also own all of those digitally, as well
