The Handmaids Tale - Season 2 Hulu/Sunday Night C4

Recommended Posts

Loving the new series. I was worried they'd struggled to keep up the quality but there have been some really jaw-dropping moments already.

The only criticism I have is...

Spoiler

Offred seems to be treated pretty leniently compared to other Handmaids, although I guess they explain it away as the family having to save face.

Overall though, it's wiping the floor with the other big releases this year.

Only because she's carrying the sprog.

Oh thank god, something happened.

It's all a bit slow, I don't normally mind that but the show seems to be treading the same ground in a far less confident and affecting manner.

Feels a bit like they are spinning it out for multiple seasons, rather than giving the story any impetus

Yes - lost patience with the last episode (watching it on Channel 4) and just had it on in the background. It's turned into fictional world tourism - Offred wandering around, having a think, wandering somewhere else, having another think - nothing is actually happening, just tidbits of setting drip fed through incidental moments or flashback. It feels like we should be following another character where some drama is unfolding rather than just sticking with the same character as she moves from A to B. More story please!

I thought episode 2 where she's holed up in the Boston Globe offices was an amazing bit of environmental storytelling. Not something you see that often in TV.

I like TV series that ebb and flow. Episode 2 was fine in isolation, but you need to mix those environmental storytelling episodes with balls out thriller episodes like in S1. At the moment it's hour after hour of environmental storytelling and I feel like I'm treading water.

I know what you mean but it was faffing about in a warehouse to me - it required breaking her character to do it.

She seems to have been told to wait a bit so she goes mad and starts making loads of noise. Not remotely in-character.

I liked ep2. She was in the offices for 2 months & i thought her shrine to the murdered was very nicely done. Also the evidence I thought was a smart thing. She knew she wasn’t gonna be staying there forever so why not leave some clues/information. Much like the scrawl in the cupboard.

I’m really struggling to follow this series and I don’t know if it’s because I’ve not been paying full attention or because it’s been really slow and dull, and they’ve basically just hit a reset to back where we were in season one.

So, without spoilers, do they keep up momentum after the ‘big event’ or are we just back to nicely shot despair porn?

The latter.

Re: Episode 9

Spoiler

My new favourite character is the new security guy assigned to the house.

He couldn't be more obvious than if he came through the door packaged as a classic Star Wars figure called "Creepy Frowny McRape-Rape"

The rest of the episode left me cold.  The big finish of yet another shot of Elizabeth Moss staring defiantly straight into camera put the tin lid on it.

Just seen the last episode of season 2 and loved it from start to finish. There was a bit of a lull in terms of plot progression a few episodes in but otherwise it's easily one of the best shows on TV! One of the aspects I've grown to love is how many of the shots linger which gives the actors time to breathe and show off all the little character traits. You almost start to care for Serena as well, almost. ;)

Can't wait for season 3!

If that the ep that shown from America then it’s not the last ep there are 12 episodes on season 2. Not 10 like the first season (I though the same when I watched the ep then checked and there are two more eps to go )

I agree with this. Have loved this second series so far. I'm always baffled when I come into this thread and everyone is moaning about it.

Spoiler

It would have been more unbearable if she hadn't made so many daft decisions. She farted about so much that it became a bit farcical. The birth was a beautiful moment though.

Season 2 finale...

Spoiler

What a load of shit. There's no way June would have given up her baby and voluntarily remained in Gilead. Such a cheap way to justify a third season. Twice already this season she was on the brink of escape. She'll be executed on the spot!

The escape at the end was hella tense but not sure it made any sense, coming out of absolutely nowhere. Rita hadn't shown much affection for June in the episodes prior, so to gather her fellow Marthas and orchestrate a daring escape seemed farfetched. Loved Commander Joshua Lynam being the hero Gilead needs though, are we to assume that's why he's gone through so many handmaids, because he's freeing them all?
