Hooray an actual sequel

Splatoon 2 - sequel to the finest squid-based multiplayer shooter in recent memory - releases worldwide on July 27, 2017 for Nintendo Switch. Featuring a singleplayer campaign focusing on the disappearance of Callie (one of the Squid Sisters who featured prominently in the first game) along with... some kind of multiplayer? I've not seen anything that confirms what modes will be present, though going off the recent testfire you can be sure that Turf War will be there.

What are you talking about

Splatoon is a multiplayer shooter on Wii U, released in 2015. Its main gimmick is that the game's arsenal of weapons all fire ink rather than bullets; while on ink of your team's colour you can turn into a squid and move faster and climb up walls. Whilst submerged in ink you also recharge your ink supply. Ink of the opposing team's colour is dangerous; running through it will slow you down and getting hit by it generally doesn't end well.

Turf War is a game mode that lasts three minutes, in which the team who has inked the most turf at the end wins.

What kind of weapons are there

Buckets! Rollers! Brushes!

Sniper rifles. Ones that fire ink.

Some fluff from the JP Splatoon Twitter:

Quote

This is an investigative report from the Squid Research Lab.
This place is called 'Haikara Square'. 'Haikara' means super cool/trendy/fresh
Young squid gather here, and now it is the freshest spot around.
It's two stops away from Haikara City station, and it looks like new shops are opening one by one.
Just like in our world, two years have past in the squid world, and the trends have shifted.

If I had to guess, this area is probably based on one of the small, super trendy areas of Tokyo like Shimokitazawa or Koenji, which are only a couple of stops away from the huge Shinjuku station.

This is a report about Inkling heads, which we have been interested in since October last year.
"Are these new species of squid?" we wondered, but it seems that it is just their hair, and the style of their tentacles is unlike anything we've seen before.
It seems that new hairstyles have been invented.
Or rather, because they are tentacles, perhaps we should call them 'tentacle styles'... Or even Geso-kei? Geso = tentacles, kei = style
...Or not. 'Hairstyle' is fine too.

Hairstyles aside, there has been an increased variaton in bottoms styles too.
Headgear, clothes and shoes have all changed, and abilities are no longer attached to gear, so you can choose what you like.
Very stylish.

This is an investigative report from the Squid Research Lab.
As always, it seems the Inklings still spend all their time playing Turf War.
The fundamental rules haven't changed: two teams of four battle for victory by inking the most turf.
In the heat of the battle, Inklings prove how fresh they really are.

This is one of the new stages, Battera Street. 'Battera' is a type of mackerel sushi
This area hidden down a back alley just off downtown is the stage for battles.
The most picky of specialist shops stand side by side here, making it a place for the freshest, most cutting-edge Inklings to gather.
These Inklings are the type to follow the absolute latest trends.

The turf map has changed too.
You can call it up at any time with the X button.
In this state, you can press a button on the D-pad to choose a teammate, then press A to super-jump to them.
Press 'down' on the D-pad to go back to the spawn point.
You can also use the gyro sensor to move the cursor.

The day after tomorrow (Sun 15th of Jan), starting at 13:50 JST, a Splatoon 2 stage event will be hosted.
I will also be taking the stage, so please do watch.

We have discovered a photo spot where you can experience Splatoon 2 items for yourself.
You will be able to grab your weapon of choice, and take a photo with it.
If for some reason you are far away from the weapons ground, you can still see what it looks like... Why not use your imagination?

I only played Splatoon for the first time recently after borrowing it from a friend. It's really good. One of the best things about it is how I can play an online shooter against randoms and I can have my son in the same room. I'm glad it's getting a sequel.

Never played Splatoon before.

Oh man, you missed out. It's phenomenal. Like, really, really, really, really good. Best thing Nintendo have put out for years.

This is the most exciting game revealed for Switch imo.

Still more of a 1.5 update, but looks to offer enough new stuff to make it worthwhile. The dual pistol/FLUDD jetpack is wonderful and if they get the feel right it could be very satisying to control with the Joycons.

For anyone interested, the artbook is now up for pre-order on Amazon UK.

Can't wait for this. My most played game in years.

Now, ignoring the potential for all new modes, guns, levels and all that, the one thing they really need to sort out is when you go into the shop to check out something and if you haven't been for a long time, there's an unskippable sequence where the shopkeeper explains every single new item he has for you to buy. It destroys my soul a little every time that happens. I can't believe it was never patched.

The jump button is going to be in the wrong place. The stick is going to get in the way of my silky smooth salmon leaping swimming action.

:-O

Apparently it's moving to B now.

More info on weapons from a Switch event:

This suggests that the dodge is exclusive to the new dual pistols; rollers flick ink in different ways depending on if you're grounded or airborne; and chargers can retain their charge for a short period in Squid form!

I managed to get a go today at Switch exhibition. It looked excellent on the screen, and the new specials seemed very interesting.

I played with the Switch in the handheld configuration. The gyro aiming was as beautiful as ever, and the shoulder buttons were spot on.

The placement of jump will take a bit of getting used to, as I kept jumping then moving my thumb up looking for the control stick which wasn't there. And then if I hovered over the buttons I'd prsss the X button and bring the map up.

:-DD

Switch doesn't have Miiverse. Splatfest is ruined.

This is another huge negative, probably the biggest I think, which seems to have gone largely unnoticed... How could Nintendo have delivered such an awesome social platform like Miiverse only to drop it after one round of a generation? What are they thinking? It serves its purpose perfectly, and even the mobile version for web is optimised to the point of users not really needing an app (I work in this field and that particular aspect was perfectly delivered. Hats off, etc.).

Also, Miitomo, and Miis generally. All fucking dropped. Cunts. I suppose they want to wipe that Wii brand entirely clean...

Has it been dropped? I've not seen anything confirmed either way yet.

There are still so many unknowns right now. They'll surely have to replace it with something similar.

Gameplay video! Switches around a bit but you get to see the longer-range roller flicks and also the new Dualies - which come with two aiming reticles. Be interesting to see how accurate they are.

I mentioned in the general Switch thread that I think the mobile app is going to be Miiverse, which would kind of make sense. Miiverse was great on the Wii U but you needed the touch screen to get the most out of it. If the Switch is docked, then obviously you can't use the touch screen and how would you enter any updates with a traditional controller setup? Nightmare!

Plus Id imagine you would create your Mii on the app as your phone has a camera - the Switch doesn't.

Yes, each Joy-Con contains an accelerometer and gyroscope.

By the way: so does the Switch Pro Controller.

Ah, good. I was wondering that.

The sound of a sniper/charger kill is the nicest sound in gaming. I wish they'd get rid of the jump shooting in this game as it's one of my pet hates.

Well, a Nintendo representative told reporters that Miiverse is being dropped and no one has come out to deny it.

Can't find the clip of the Pro Controller in action (watched it this morning, was a Japanese Tree House thing) but there's this :)

I really want to encourage every serious future Switch owner to get a Pro Controller. Not only does it have a proper D-pad (utterly indispensable for games like Ultra Street Fighter II) but it also has much nicer, bigger and better placed buttons as well. (The B button doesn't stand in the way of the right analogue stick, for instance.)

Plus it has almost all the functionality of the two Joy-Con bits, too. Waggle, HD rumble, amiibo NFC reader, etc. IIRC, the only thing it lacks is the infrared sensor/pointer.

The more I think about Miiverse being dropped the more it makes sense... They will want more people to share to Facebook and Twitter, not to Miiverse where content will only be visible to other Nintendo users.

They should have never spoilt us with Miiverse in the first place. :(
