Mary Poppins Returns - Christmas Day 2018

Recommended Posts

Mary Poppins is getting a sequel, starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall.

I'm almost in a state of shock. Can't believe I hadn't heard about this being in development. I will avoid this like hell and only consider watching it if it were to get an insane amount of rave reviews.

This just feels wrong to me :( it's not like Disney ever cared for P. L. Travers and her vision, but man...

Would love to be proven wrong of course.

Plus, ever since seeing this, the only new Mary Poppins I accept is a Kristen Bell Mary Poppins

Oh come on, I can see why you might think this would be a Travers-ty, but it's not like they're calling it Marty Poppins and having the lead played by Ricky Gervais. ;)

I mean sure, it might not sound like a jolly holiday to you, but Disney have got to feed the birds somehow, and I think that Emily Blunt is exactly the spoonful of sugar that could make this into something truly supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Are you guys gonna be angry if someone tries to replicate the accent Dick Van Dyke used in the film?

They should get Keanu Reeves to replace Dick Van Dyke. His attempt at an English accent in Dracula was terrible.

still THE Best thing in that film..

Having watched it just the other week for the first time in ages, I'd be surprised if anyone could even if they tried. All over the fucking shop doesn't begin to describe it, it's utterly amazing.

It's another weird case of remaking something that doesn't really need to be remade. Like 101 Dalmatians I suppose.

The thing is, there are plenty of films out there which could do with a reboot because, whilst they weren't very good at the time, there was at least the kernel of a good idea in there.

But it's not a remake, it's a sequel set in "depression era London" where the original kids have grown up.

On one hand it does seem like Disney having zero new ideas (honest, The Force Awakens wasn't a remake!!) and just looking for a nostalgic name/brand to cash in on.

On the other hand, they are trying to adapt the further original stories into movies, which they never would have done back in the 60s/70s (who needs a Mary Poppins sequel when you can have Bedknobs and Broomsticks, eh??)

However, my feeling is that this is all just getting boring now. I don't want my son to be experiencing the same shit (but with better CGI) when I grew up, I want him (and me) to experience new stuff.

Cant wait for the "One of our Dinosaurs Is Missing" sequel, mind you, with James Cordon made up to look Chinese...

As an aside, One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing still has a bit of a haunting edge for me as I clearly remember it being hastily shown on a Saturday night back in the 80s when one of the stunts on Noel's House Party went wrong and killed a member of the public.

And yet Edmonds still walks free today.
