I can't believe they've added motion aiming, that's bonkers. Didn't expect it. I didn't much enjoy it after so much time with Splatoon so kind of wrote it off but I'll be dipping back in today.

I adored the freedom of motion controlled bow aiming with split joycons in Zelda because it only began once you held the trigger down. In Splatoon I found that you end up with your wrist contorted at strange angles and have to regularly reset the view.

I assume Doom uses the latter kind?

Can't comment on Splatoon 2 as I haven't played it on Switch - but it uses the stick but motion control for fine tuning.  It's great for zoomed in aiming... headshots-a-gogo.

IMO - I think it's the perfect combo and I wish Skyrim did it too.

It does, doesn't it? It's not the most sensitive of motion control, but it works IIRC.

Only does it during aiming... I want it always on like Doom. It’s great for subtle adjustments and would stop me accidentally picking up fucking bowls when I want he stamina potion beside it.

Ah I see. Yes you are right. And you're right that would be really good.

And apparently the version of Payday 2 on Switch is severely behind the other console versions in terms of content/updates. Yikes.

People are saying that the new Doom patch also made it run at a (somewhat) higher resolution?

can't say I noticed - but it did seem buttery smooth... smooootttthhh.... such a good port.

I know - for shame.  Testament to just how amazing the Switch line up is.

I saw someone at Overkill confirm that all DLC was included apart from 2 characters. Maybe a patch will fix it?

You'd be better off buying the unbranded version for a few quid cheaper, unless you're insistent on having a Switch logo on a memory card you'll never look at. https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter-Performance/dp/B073JYC4XM/

Or get this one from PicStop for £29.99 if you don't mind waiting a few days. I bought a couple from them the other week, so can recommend them.

Edit: Or this slightly slower one for £26.59 https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sandisk-ultra-128gb-micro-sdxc-card-sd-adapter-2659-mymemory-with-code-2897452

The SD cards are capped so the. speeddoesn’t really make a difference.

There's also the matter of the SD card speeds. The fact neither of these Sandisk SDs can overtake Switch's on-board storage suggests there's a speed cap. Also, it doesn't matter what the rated read bandwidth is on the SD package. Whether that's 80MB/s on the 16GB model, or 90MB/s on the 64GB model, it's clear Switch isn't making the most of either. As long as it's a minimum of UHS-1, you get roughly the same loading times, or even slightly better, as a much faster rated card.

DOOM Switch Update Adds Motion Controls, & Party Support

Quote

Get ready to blast through demons on-the-go in new ways thanks to a brand-new game update for DOOM, arriving today on Nintendo Switch. With today’s update, we’ve added Motion Aiming to DOOM, a much-requested control option that allows you to utilize the built-in gyroscope of the Joy-Con for more precise aiming. The option can be used in conjunction with traditional aiming using the controller’s analog stick for the perfect blend of immersion and accuracy.

For multiplayer fans, we’ve made it even easier to group up and play with your friends. We’ve added a new party system to DOOM multiplayer, so you can easily get your friends together and throw down with foes.

We know how important the game icon is to Nintendo Switch fans, so we wanted to give ours an upgrade. With today’s update, you’ll now see a shiny new game icon to match the game’s boxart – as seen on the main menu of the Nintendo Switch below. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Along with the new features, we’ve implemented several fixes to make the game better. Below are the full patch notes of what’s included in the new update:

DOOM for Nintendo Switch: February Patch Notes

New Features!

  • Motion Aiming – New control scheme option allows you to tilt the Nintendo Switch for more precise aiming
  • Multiplayer Parties – Added new party system, making it easier to group up and play with your friends in multiplayer
  • Updated Game Icon – Game icon now matches the DOOM for Nintendo Switch boxart

Improvements

  • Increased the average resolution in lower-res areas of the game
  • Implemented CPU optimizations
  • Added Traditional Chinese language support

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in a possible crash when using the BFG
  • Fixed an issue that caused audio issues while playing
  • Fixed an issue that caused stretched textures to appear in multiplayer
  • Fixed an issue where controls became unresponsive on the game menu
  • Fixed an issue where players may have incorrectly received a ban notice in multiplayer

Just tried out doom post patch in handheld and it's clearer in big fights. Framerate is also much more consistent. The gyro aiming makes it amazing though. So much easier to pull of headshots and quick movement between close enemies.

I'm a massive gyro aiming fan and wish this was the standard for all fps's or any game that requires aiming.  I love that gyro aiming has been added and was tempted to get it for my Switch but not at £50 on the eshop.  I'll stick with the Steam version which I used gyro aiming already for with the Steam controller*.  I don't take my Switch out of the house except for holidays so portability is not high on my list of needs.

*Until payday as I love Doom
