Top Gun: Maverick

Recommended Posts

It's moving ahead, being written right now, and with Maverick back in full force, rather than the initial plan for him having a small role. It's going to explore how navy aviation is changing, with dogfighting all but gone and the rise of drones. Hopefully not a remake of Stealth.

It's being written by Justin Marks, whose theatrical movie credits include Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and...that's it. He's got other stuff in pre-production, but what's released isn't a great record to judge him by. Given the videogame heavy nature of the forum, I'll just mention he's also going to potentially ruin Shadow of the Colossus and Dead Space.

Well I'm down with that. I loved both Legacy (except CGI Jeff) and Oblivion. Kosinski can certainly direct action sequences and pair them with stirring music. It won't be the film that Scott would have delivered, his style is in a class of its own, but I'm confident there's hope. Let's see those big bombastic 80's blue skies to banish the shit show of modern reality!

You need to see Top Gun, it is the epitome of 80s cinema excess, led by Don Simpson, Hollywood's leading berserker* of the period.

Its a flexed bicep wrapped in spandex while big tunes play in the background of a movie.

Mother Goose, you pussy!

Ahem.

*actually, he was a fucking twat even by Hollywood standards, but still managed to contribute to one of the great periods of overblown action cinema.

He was nearly cool in that movie, he ruined it with that bloody cringe inducing poem

"THE ALABAMA SLAMMA!"

Sigh, those colours! One thing that needs to be mentioned is the C word. I really hope they don't go down the heavy CGI route. That would be a travesty and immediately neuter the sequel for me. Sign whatever bs pledge the usaf require, but lets see some real kick ass aerial photography. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

If they need to use Raptors, it'll have to be CGI. They cost the entire budget of a massive blockbuster.

I hope we stick to older aircraft, which can probably be bought outright for 2 and sixpence, these days.

They don't buy planes for movies like this. They use regular Navy (or Air Force for those movies) planes, usually.

I believe the military even have a special section for coordinating these things with movie and TV.

I was making with the funny. The F-35 is barely air worthy, I can't imagine they'll want them faffing around for a film. But it wouldn't cost as much to rent older stuff.

I just realized Russia have barely competed in this game for years, have they? Perhaps Maverick and co will be up against ISIS-controlled DJI Phantoms in this, and it'll be an awkward allegory to the ineffectual nature of the Navy in a modern combat theatre.

Good thing I read the first post again, that's exactly what it's going to be, it seems.

@JohnC  Yeah, he's gonna be like a pig in shit basically. Lucky sod!

I can see them still using F-14s*, 16s and 18s. Especially if they stay in the competitive spirit of the original. Those planes are still in service and provide valuable cover, training etc. Especially for close combat techniques.

Edit, bah it's out of service!
