The Techno Thread

Thanks to this twitter account - Universal Techno - I've been listening to a load of techno mixes recently from the last 10-15 years or so, mainly on the bangin'/poundin'/pumpin'/etc side (Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Dave Clarke and the like) and it's all rather fab.

There's a whole bunch of classic material from the last 20 years kicking about so seemed like a good chance to spread some love:

Jeff Mills - The Extremist Nasty!

Relentless stuff, the piano is total hands in the air positivity though without ever hitting happy hardcore style cheddar - superb!

Technasia - Force: Love this, soulful detroit techno but keeps the bpms high. One of the rare techno tracks with singing on that isn't shit.

Dave Clarke - Thunder: Classic Dave Clarke madness.

Anyone else got any goodness to share; new or old, acid techno or mentasm gabba - there's loads of stuff on Youtube

I'm in love with Pendle Coven at the moment, and their Iamnoman track is just superb. Off their Iamnoman EP.

'Iamnoman' on the flip is just full of dread and menace, building up tension with layered chord and pressured kicks that somehow sound like the perfect union of Rob Hood's minimal functionality, Scion style deep intent and the echo-chamber snare reverberation of Kode 9

Another hugely atmospheric track & Lawrence - Swap

& Twin Cities There is an 11m version of The Tunnel, and Twin Cities is like a mini-DJ Mix coming in at nearly 11m. Both are well worth a listen.

Juan Atkins - Track Ten Love this funky little number.

Jeff Mills - The Keeping Of The Kept Love this track off his Metropolis soundtrack album.

Sorry guys - i missed this somehow. Anyway theres a new huge Techno MP3 mix coming up VERY soon (Vol. 2 of the generation series i'm doing.)

I forget if i mentioned it at the meet Joyrex buts its got loads of R&S stuff, plus delves into some deep, acid and hard tech territory.

Oh and BTW - if you like your techno hard - Jeff Mill's Berlin is where its at.

Get the EP and watch the needle when the bassline kicks in. It just SHAKES (Literally - At least it does on my Tresor pressing).

Anyway Jeff Mills - confidentials (AX9B - B2) which featured a cut from "Growth".

And UFO - which sounds like the Charley/Juno 6 sample as featured in many rave tracks...but played REALLY well...

Amazing no one has uploaded Berlin or Confidentials 1-4 which i just happen have.

Oh and on the subject of Vogel....

Surgeon's remix of It One Jah by the Advent. Absolutely loved this back in the day, especially when he ramps the decay on the kicks up. HUMM HUMM HUMM HUMM!

As for Mills, The Extremist Retro Mix is way better than the original, I reckon:

The DNA remix of it is even more mental, but it doesn't seem to be on Youtube at all. Boo.

Some classic Landstrumm:

And to chill out, Dave Angel's Lagoon:

Have you heard Jeff Mills new EP "The Good robot"?.

Very nice. Not quite up there with Alpha Centari but very nice. Good to see him back on the Millsart tip.

Listened to the samples of the tracks on YouTube and Boomkat, it's alright nothing special.

"Things to do with your Robot" is lovely. Its typical Mills, but i like the sinister nature behind it. Its amazing how he manages to constantly make simple but dark patterns and theres usually subtle tones/basses in the background.

It has a very 60's sci-fi soundtrack feel to it, but modernised well. Its a great sound.

Thought I'd bump this thread to ask for some 90s techno recommendations. I dug out these records the other day, which all still sound great. I want more of same. Driving beats and strong melodies. No cheese!

Jam & Spoon - Stella

Carl Cox - Siberian Snowstorm

Carl Cox - Phoebus Apollo

Ken Ishii - Extra (Luke Slater Remix)

Silent Phase - Psychotic Funk.mp3 - had to upload this one as its not on Youtube.

All I have that really fits the bill is this compilation and Carl Cox's FACT mix. Oh, I've got Luke Slater's Fear & Loathing mixes too, but I didn't go much on them.

There's a guy called Mike Dehnert who has been putting out some lovely techno recently. Think he's Dutch. Or German. His 'Umlaut 2' release in particular is great.

It's on Spotify! I think you meant, Umluft 2?

Link

In fact Spotify is now pretty good for Techno, with Basic Channel, Carl Craig, Rhythm & Sound, Maurizio, Underground Resistance, Robert Hood, and some tracks/albums from Model 500/Juan Atkins, Kenny Larkin, Dave Angel, FUSE, Lawrence, and Innerzone Orchestra etc..

Fuse & Planetary Assault Systems
FUSE - Substance Abuse. Absolute Beast!

Yes. These are the sort of things I'm after. Anything more melodic?

Dub techno, then. Basic Channel and that. Maurizio and them. Hit me up.

Deep Chord presents Echospace - The Coldest Season - Best £3 you'll spend. Perfect album for late nights, and I would imagine smoking.

Some Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound albums on Spotify now. M-Series.

There is also an album of Model 500 - Starlight versions from Deepchord which I think you'd dig. The original is timeless beauty.
