I'm surprised there's no topic for this yet but here we are, the remake of Seiken Densetsu 3, aka Secret of Mana 2 aka Trials of Mana is coming out in April and there's a demo available now, for Switch at the least. I've played it for a while and it seems like a very faithful remake of the original SNES game, if a little low-budget compared to something like Dragon Quest XI, keeping the colourful charm and lovely music of the old game and tarting it up for modern tech. The battle system has had a bit of an overhaul too, feeling much better than the clunky 16bit version, and it's worth keeping an eye out for the eventual release. In particular, those bosses look extremely NiGHTS-y - not just their character designs, but also their attacks (spike balls and flames) remind me of some of the hazards in that game's final boss fight. And that voiceover is earnestly cheesy in exactly the same way as the narration in Christmas NiGHTS... "Cephalopainter" - is that a Splatoon reference? And a few seconds later at 1:10 there's a familiar-looking blue runner! Did I mention that it's all very reminiscent of the 1996 Sega Saturn game NiGHTS Into Dreams?

Oh, and Yasawas and Dandy_Sephy expressed interest in seeing a dedicated thread. Released in 2009 on the PS2, Persona 4 arrived very late on Sony's last-gen console, but it's remained one of the most charming and rewarding JRPGs out there and is one of my all-time favourite games. It's a story that revolves around a group of high-school students in Inaba who stumble across an alternate world inside televisions where dangerous creatures known as Shadows roam. A friendly character within this world tells the students that someone has been kidnapping people and throwing them into TVs, and this provides the setup for most of the rest of the game, as the students set about exploring the TV world in order to rescue people trapped there and perhaps get more clues about the kidnapper and (ultimately) the nature of the TV world. The beauty about the Persona games – at least, the later ones – is that they are really several games rolled into one. Exploring the TV world forms the core dungeon grind, but the heroes are still only students, and get up to student-y things such as studying for exams, answering quick quizzes in class, hanging out with friends in a sort of dating-sim lite (without all the creepiness), working part-time jobs that help to boost stats and earn money, fishing for things at the river, accepting occasional sidequests from people in Inaba and more besides. Whilst you get to explore various different dungeons in the TV world, Inaba's available locations largely stay the same, and so variety comes from the in-game calendar. On each new day there may be different people in town that you can spend time with, different jobs available, books being released in the bookstore which you can buy and read at home to boost stats, and more besides. The calendar also serves as motivation to rescue people from the TV world before it's too late. Once you finish your school day and are free to explore the town, you have the option of entering the TV world through a large flatscreen in a local department store, which is the only way to enter dungeons and battle through them to save victims. The dungeon design is perhaps one of my favourite things about later Persona games, since each one is made up of several "floors", with the dungeon getting progressively harder from floor to floor, culminating in a boss battle on the final floor. It gives players a nice way of knowing if they're out of their depth and need to step back a few floors before progressing. Battles aren't random but are triggered in a stealth-lite format; if a Shadow spots you a "!" will appear above them and they'll give chase; if they strike you they will gain a free turn at the start of the battle; however, if you strike them without them noticing, your party gets the opening strike. The battles require you to take advantage of elemental strengths and weaknesses; the eponymous Persona that the students eventually gain are demons that can be summoned in battle and offer a selection of skills; buffs, nerfs, physical and elemental attacks, healing, etc. However, each persona can also be strong and weak against certain elements. If an elemental weakness is exposed on either a player or an enemy, a free turn is granted to whoever exposed the weakness. Therefore, a player who knows certain weaknesses in advance can exploit them one after the other with successive turns, knocking down enemies and potentially earning the chance to do a powerful "all-out attack" if all enemies are downed. In having such a satisfying combat system, giving the player plenty to do outside of the dungeon, and designing each dungeon to get progressively more challenging as the player escalates, it nearly always feels rewarding to play. There are a few difficulty spikes with certain bosses, but things only really get hard if you deliberately rush through dungeons and avoid encounters. Reading back through what I've written it sounds a bit like a review but I really just wanted to provide a primer for people who are new to Persona and want to know what all the fuss is about. If anyone wants to add anything I've missed, feel free. I should just stress that there may be some details I've missed and there may still be bits that will be confusing to newcomers when they get their hands on the game, so I hope that we can get some good discussion going between new and experienced players. I was impatient and ended up importing the US version (and I know others did as well) but if enough people are getting into this for the first time I'll probably start a new game with you all. Not to mention it's a Roguelike and has got some steller indie devs behind it (Baba is Me, Crayon Physics and The Swapper).   8. It's a game about floating around derelict spaceships, breaking them apart to salvage valuable parts. To do it safely, you have to solve problems like finding ways to turn off propellant flow before cutting through pipes. You can slice chunks of metal apart a bit like in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and then tether the chunks to their designated recovery locations. And if you get things wrong, STUFF BLOWS UP and dry messages flash up like "Your next of kin will be billed for unreturned equipment."   10. From nowhere the latest classic to get the old school revival project rework is Sega's 1986 Master System game Alex Kidd in Miracle World. A video was revealed in today's IGN Summer Expo debut stream and it's being published by Merge games who handled the euro release of Streets of Rage 4. I'll update as more info is released.
  11. Did anyone else start playing this on the Switch the other day (Or indeed has played it on other platforms). I'm really enjoying myself. Combat is fast and fun. The plot can be a little talky and slow but I like the castaways idea and building up the base slowly as you move through the plot is satisfying. Currently I'm level 30.

  13. This was on my radar as the soundtrack is done by a guy who's music I pretty much buy instantly and published by a record label that deals in various types of heavy metal. I know. It's just come out and I'm broke so I've not bought it but was surprised to find there's not thread. Steam only, currently.

I've posted about this before in the Kickstarter thread, but even though the game is crowd-funded it's not actually on Kickstarter (it's a fixed funding project on Indiegogo instead) and that thread perhaps doesn't give it the exposure it deserves. The game is in its last week of funding and still needs about 300k at the time of writing, so any help is welcome at this stage, So what is Indivisible? In short, it's a hybrid of a 2D Metroidvania game (in that it has a large interconnected map, platforming, areas that are locked off until you have certain items or skills, secrets and even some sequence breaking) and an RPG, most notably in its party management, leveling and battle system. Combat is heavily inspired by Valkyrie Profile in that each character in your four-person party is mapped to a button, with directional inputs adding more moves. Combat is not turn-based. You can attack as long as you have meter, so meter management plays an extremely important role in combat. The game is made by Lab Zero Games, the team that brought you Skullgirls. Here's their campaign video: This is by no means final, but what is cool is that everything you see in there is already playable. Lab Zero released a free playable prototype for Linux, Windows, Mac, Steam and PS4. Even though it's just the tip of the iceberg, it plays really well and has some cool stuff for expert players in it, like a secret boss and sequence breaking for speedruns and pacifist runs. The way attacks link, with certain attacks setting enemies up for juggling, attacks having different status effects (like putting slow down on an enemy) and the different effects for the supers of each character can all be glimpsed in the prototype, and that's without all the additional characters, weapons, stat differentiation and tech like guard breaks, buffs/debuffs and so on. Other things of note: - Your party consists of your character and three Incarnations, Now what's cool about these Incarnations is that they - like the enemies - are based on a wide variety of mythologies and cultures from all over the world. This results in an incredibly diverse cast of characters.   16. Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark Price: £19.99 (ish - varies on which store) Genre: SRPG Metacritic: 86% This has quite possibly the worst title for a game, ever. Seriously - it's awful. But as far as turned based SRPG's go, it's really good. It's Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, basically. But as Square show little interest in bringing that back, this will have to do. The story is generic as they come (An Immortal Council choose you as an agent to bring peace to the land...), but it plays a really decent turned based game. Combat is pretty straightforward, but there's a great job tree and character creation and customisation tools and I've spent far too long making characters for my squad. Some of the later classes look massively overpowered, but it'll take a while to get to them. Honestly, the only reason I'm making this thread is because the game reminds me so much of FFTA with bits of Disgaea thrown in. I bought the Switch version yesterday (40% off in the sale this week!) and I've out about 4 hours in since. There seems to be such a shortage of good turn based SRPGs recently, that I thought I'd share the love.

This launched a few days ago on Steam Early Access, although it seems pretty well developed already, barring some of the item descriptions and a truck customization system still to come, along with new territories. It already has voice acting and the soundtrack is complete. Big differences between this and Cook! Serve! Delicious! 2!!! is that in this one you are running a food truck - this means rather than having waves of rush hour followed by slow periods, instead you do a ton of prep in between stops, with a few advance orders on the road. They've also completely removed chores (such as dishwashing and taking out rubbish) which makes for a much more fun game. They also have added a proper campaign mode, with a campaign map and location-based progression. Last big change is being able to flick the right stick to serve all your ready dishes at once, which is great.     West of Loathing

    This released last year on PC and last week on the Switch. Don't let the art style put you off, this is a fantastic comedy RPG-lite. You play a young lad who sets off from home to find fame and fortune in the wild west. Along the way, he fights not just gangs and snakes, but demon cows, skeletons and goblins. And it's funny. As in, genuinely funny. The humour reminds me of a cross between Monty Python and Terry Pratchett. There's lots of text, but you never once want to skip it because the dialogue is that good. My one issue is the combat isn't great. It reminds me a bit of the combat in Paper Mario, but it's on the easy side. In fact, I've only died once in about 4 hours of play. But it's not a reason to be put off - it's an aside to the storytelling. Honestly, it's far better than it has any right to be. It's probably my favourite Switch game so far this year.

Anyways, I thought it looked nice, so I added it to my wishlist. It is currently on sale (75% off until March 1st) and so I took the plunge on Friday night and I really enjoyed it. The graphics are good once you tweak the settings to your liking - personally I wasn't keen on the CRT filters and over saturated colours. The music is good and most importantly, so is the gameplay. It's nothing revolutionary, but the combo system and special meter work well to stop it being just a button masher. There are 3 playable characters to choose from - with more unlockable by the looks of it. Definitely recommended for the current price of £3.74! (not my video)
