  1. Synopsis: Two sisters find their relationship challenged as a nearby planet threatens to collide into the Earth. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, John Hurt, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Keifer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling (four out of five ain't bad). Official Website I really wasn't a fan of Anti-Christ, in fact I have to go all the way back to Dogville in 2003 for the last film I've liked from him (excluding scripting duties as I thought Dear Wendy was very good), but hopefully this is a return to form. Unfortunately the trailer looks as overblown as his last film.
  2. Appy polly loggies if this has already been discussed somewhere but I've done some fairly extensive searching and turned nothing up. Basically I was just having a Google to see if there was any more news about the Scorsese/De Niro/von Trier proposed series of 'obstructed' Taxi Driver remakes (or the remake of The Five Obstructions, depending on which way you look at it) and, while unfortunately not finding any news at all, did happen to come across this little remake by Michel Gondry which I thought people might be interested in given that his films seem very popular here: So, there it is. It would be great to see it do well so that The Night of the Triffids could also be made. The first has been made so many times now, with the 80s BBC version getting it pretty damn right, the second hasn't had the opportunity yet and it could have some really good moments.
  4. First I've heard of this - a film about the making of Psycho, based on the book by Stephen Rebello and directed by Sacha 'Anvil' Gervasi. Anthony Hopkins will play Hitchcock, Helen Mirren his wife, and (oh boy) Scarlet Johannson will be everyone's favourite naked stabbed-in-the-shower victim. No word yet on who will play Anthony Perkins but I'm sure Michael Fassbender's agent's have already been contacted. I'm intrigued as the original Psycho is one of my favourite films (I haven't yet dared to watch the remake) and it's an interesting cast so far, although I don't know what Gervasi's track record is like. Interestingly, he's also making a film about the life of Herve 'Knick Knack' Villechaize, who's one of my favourite Bond baddies.
  5. Synopsis: In the tiny, rural town of Carthage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town’s most beloved residents. He taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it came as no surprise when he befriended Marjorie Nugent, an affluent widow who was as well known for her sour attitude as her fortune. Bernie frequently traveled with Marjorie and even managed her banking affairs. Marjorie quickly became fully dependent on Bernie and his generosity and Bernie struggled to meet her increasing demands. Bernie continued to handle her affairs, and the townspeople went months without seeing Marjorie. The people of Carthage were shocked when it was reported that Marjorie Nugent had been dead for some time, and Bernie Tiede was being charged with the murder. I hate Jack Black with a passion, he even tries to ruin great films like The Muppets, so it was good to see he only gets a couple of lines in the trailer.
  6. I'm basically stealing something Gorf King brought up in a PM but hopefully it sparks a wider discussion on here: What is the 'style' of cinema since 2000 onwards? If you look throughout film history each decade (with the obvious overlap here and there) has had its own distinct style and thematic and genre preferences. You can instantly tell a '80s film from a '70s movie within the opening few minutes and it is the same for every other decade of film. Yet if you look at everything post-2000 it is hard to really see a style that links those films. So in twenty years time when people look back what are the past twelve years going to really be remembered for? Stylistically a lot of modern films seem to borrow from other decades. Now this is nothing new but where previous decades took the style of a previous decade and made something new and fresh we now get film-makers merely copying the style verbatim or making small inconsequential tweaks. Right now we are clearly living through an '80s revival and there have been a number of very good 1980s inspired films (Drive and Animal Kingdom to name but two) yet as good as the films are it is hard to say that they are putting much of a spin on what went before. Trying to think of what this period will be remembered for is tough and there are probably four key areas that distinguish it from past decades. Digital - Digital, on both the production and distribution side, came of age in the last ten years. Whilst it has revolutionised film-making it hasn't necessarily brought about the introduction of a 'style' per se, unless you want to count the found footage genre. 3D - Although 3D has been around for many years it never quite pervaded cinema the way it has post-Avatar. There are signs of 3D beginning to lose its lustre with audiences but the simple fact that Avatar is by far the highest grossing film of all time means that this period of history will probably always be synonymous with the 3D experience. The Comic Book Movie - Are comic book/superhero movies a legitimate genre now? If so it is certainly a genre that distinguishes the decade from any other. Remakes - 'There are no original ideas left in Hollywood' - it is an often heard comment these days largely because of the baffling popularity of remakes. The truth is that there has never been an original idea in Hollywood to begin with seeing as most films come from other sources (books, plays etc.). Of course the difference is we now have direct comparisons rather than different interpretations. Film-makers may like to use words such as 're-imagining' to describe their inferior versions but the fact is they are always going to be compared with the film that went before it, and nine times out of ten the original comes out on top. If this decade is really going to be remembered for remakes, 3D and the comic book movie are we not living through the worst period in cinematic history?

Thought about this the other day when (I'm ashamed to say) I finally got around to watching the Blues Brothers My girlfriend had seen it before obviously and when it comes to Aretha Franklin's song in the cafe she says "if they made this today all those dancers would be stick thin with implants... and she'd be Beyonce", which is probably quite true. Got me thinking about whether it had ever been in line for a remake and it really wouldn't surprise me if they did to be honest. So what other classics have you ever had the fear about and how would they 'update' them to fit in more with modern day? I keep trying to think of totally untouchable films but then keep hearing more and more stuff recently that shows I'm too late on this anyway - Flight of the Navigator FFS?! I'm sure we're going to start seeing things only going back a few years to remake/reboot things too, since Batman's done it and Superman Returns didn't do that well kinda trying to half fit in with the original continuity, will we see a new Superman film following on from Smallville or something? A Spiderman remake after the Raimi Trilogy?

Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s and the guy who assembles the team, who has an epiphany: all of baseball’s conventional wisdom is wrong. Forced to reinvent his team on a tight budget, Beane will have to outsmart the richer clubs. The onetime jock teams with Ivy League grad Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) in an unlikely partnership, recruiting bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and win games. It’s more than baseball, it’s a revolution – one that challenges old school traditions and puts Beane in the crosshairs of those who say he’s tearing out the heart and soul of the game. HD version on Yahoo This film seems to have been in development for ages, first David Frankel (urgh) and then Soderbergh were set to direct but Sony were unhappy with his non-traditional approach and now Bennett Miller is in charge. Aaron Sorkin is one of the credited writers and the cast looks pretty impressive - Pitt, Hill, Seymour-Hoffman and Wright Penn.

Terrestrial/Freeview Film of the Week A Prophet (2009) – Film4 Friday @ 11pm Director Jacques Audiard was always going to struggle to follow-up The Beat That My Heart Skipped, but he has managed it in quite spectacular style. The prison genre is such a tricky thing to get right as there isn't a great deal of scope to be wildly imaginative within the confines that the setting dictates. But Audiard has managed it despite the film hitting the familiar prison beats. What the film does so masterfully is paint an epic story on a small canvas. Malik's rise from prison nobody to top dog is convincing and engrossing. His baptism of fire, the murder of another inmate, is one of the best scenes of 2010 and whilst it gives him status within the prison it deeply affects him too. In fact it leads to the most contentious element of the film as the dead man returns to him throughout the film like Banquo's ghost in Macbeth. It is the one element I thought I'd hate but it is used quite beautifully here. All the performances are brilliant. Tahar Rahim as Malik is the heart and soul of the picture and his unshowy performance is a triumph as you care about him but are still repelled by his actions. Niels Arestrup as César is equally great as the crime boss whose power is slowly slipping away. The direction is assured with the confines of the prison feeling claustrophobic whilst the odd moments of outdoor reprise are like a huge breath of fresh air. Satellite/Cable Film of the Week The Witches (1989) – Sky Family Thursday @ 11.35pm The stories of Roald Dahl have had a mixed transition to the silver screen. For every Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory we've had Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This week we get the chance to see two of the best adaptations - Fantastic Mr. Fox getting its terrestrial debut and The Witches getting another outing on Sky. Nicolas Roeg's The Witches is a little gem of a movie, and whilst some of the changes from the source material were unnecessary it still manages to capture the fun and creepiness of the book. It helps that Angelica Huston is on fine form as are the make-up department as the true form of the witches really is rather frightening (for a children's film). This just seems a really odd choice for David Fincher and I wished he'd have gone for something less run of the mill (I can't quite imagine the creation of Facebook is going to be filled with murder, mystery and the like). That said, it's based on The Accidental Billionaires - A Tale of Sex, Genius, Money and Betrayal so who knows what he'll end up doing with it. Furthermore, it's been adapted by Aaron Sorkin, who's is no first time screenwriter, so who knows hows what we'll end up with.   11. This is out in a couple of weeks in the US but for some reason, I've only just got round to seeing a trailer for it. It follows the basic story of a stressed out New York couple who decide to upsticks and move to Atlanta - but get sidetracked by a Hippy/New Age commune on the way. Synopsis: DAMSELS IN DISTRESS follows a trio of beautiful girls who set out to revolutionize life at a grungy East Coast College – the dynamic leader Violet Wister (Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (Carrie MacLemore). They welcome transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton) into their group which seeks to help severely depressed students with a program of good hygiene and musical dance numbers. The girls become romantically entangled with a series of men — including slick Charlie (Adam Brody), dreamboat Xavier (Hugo Becker) and the mad frat pack of Frank (Ryan Metcalf) and Thor (Billy Magnussen)—who threaten the girls’ friendship and sanity. http://youtu.be/co9MJINfLWU It is the first film by Whit Stillman in over a decade but whilst his previous films (Metropolitan, Last Days of Disco) were pretty good I'm not really feeling the forced tone of the trailer, nor the fact it shows so much.

  14. Synopsis: BUGS AND HEROES is a romantic thriller combining live action with CGI animation. It’s a tale of lonely, broken people and insects who are, both in their own ways, searching for, longing for the lost loves of their lives – an introverted NIGHT GUARD, his demanding, father, a delusional SUPERHERO wannabe, and the ORPHAN child, who spend their time in an abandoned shopping mall. In order to reconstruct his shattered psyche, the amnesiac SUPERHERO sends the ORPHAN out on the streets with a camera, and tells him to film random people. He then edits that footage into narrative films, which, he hopes, will help him remember his past and reunite with his long lost wife and son. The NIGHT GUARD, who is living an unfulfilled, static life with his father, slowly befriends these characters he is meeting in the mall and falls in love with the beautiful and lonely NURSE, who also happens to be the woman the ORPHAN is filming, and which, for some reason, reminds the SUPERHERO of his wife. Meanwhile, none of the humans are aware of the parallel microcosm of insects inhabiting the walls of the mall. These beings have struggles and dreams of their own, which they try to overcome and fulfill. Suddenly, their seemingly insignificant actions begin to affect the lives of the human characters, until both their destinies become intertwined in an unusual way, through a series of events which will forever change their lives, and, ultimately, even the fate of all mankind. Hard to tell how the finished film will turn out but the trailer certainly looks promising. The stop frame animation looks particularly good, it will be interesting to see how these two worlds work in the film.

However, these days there aren't many examples of Britain doing these types of film well so hopefully this can be the exception. It's released March 9th.

  18. Bigelow is one of my favourite action directors of the 80s/early 90s and then she went off the boil with The Weight of Water and K19: The Widowmaker. It didn't even look like she could direct action anymore after the terrible Uma Thurman Pirrelli advert. But she's back with an Iraq war movie (don't run for the exit just yet) and festival reviews from Venice and Toronto seem unanimous - this is a return to form. The film is about the lives of three bomb disposal experts and their time in Iraq. The three leads are played by relatively unknown actors but there is a very experienced supporting cast around them (including Guy Pierce, David Morse and Ralph Fiennes). Interestingly the film seems to be low on the usual 'should they be there' moralising that dominates most of these movies and is quite heavy on the action (which is arguably Bigelow's strong suit). No trailer yet (although it has now been picked up for distribution so we should see one soon) but there are a couple of atmospheric shots below.
  19. According to the Hollywood Reporter both Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain really has done wonders for his career) and Sean Penn are in talks to star in The Tree of Life. The film has been around in many guises since the 70s (then known as Q) and it originally sounded a lot more like The Fountain in that it spanned many years (with added Minotaur) but very little is known about its current state. According to IMDB the projected budget is <ccc style="font-size: inherit; background-color: yellow; " title="$150">£94.74</ccc>m which I don't really buy as I can't see any studio giving Malick that sort of cash as he doesn't make films that will draw in an audience big enough to recoup the costs. But these are encouraging times and a 3-4 year turn-around from his last film is quite surprising. At the very least it will be a stunning looking movie.
  20. Studio Ghibli's next film was announced today and it is to be directed by first time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi. Nowadays Yonebayashi is encouraged by Miyazaki Hayao every single day, who also happens to be the one handling the planning of the film. Production, as always, will be handled by Suzuki Toshio. Karigurashi no Arrietty's theme song has been co-written by the French celtic harpist/singer Cécile Corbel who also is responsible for its performance. The film stars Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst and is about a man who searches an alternate universe for a long-lost love from his youth. http://youtu.be/qahaiYkf-Bc The love story looks pretty standard fare but the switching top and bottom worlds looks pretty intriguing and well realised. Hopefully they'll use these alternate worlds to good effect.
  22. Not only did I have to endure Twilight: Breaking Dawn at the cinema they also showed a trailer for this hideously mawkish film. Synopsis: A nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player, and pacifist searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father when he was killed in the September 11 attacks. Reading the above synopsis gives you a flavour of the potential shitness of the film but the trailer really sells it. I just feel sorry for Max von Sydow, I really hope the pay was fantastic. Anybody read the book and is the story as toe-curlingly awful as the film makes out?
