  2. I fancy being able to afford a copy.
  3. So I got the opportunity to write up my PC Engine adventures for Kotaku Australia, which was fun. Writing it up (as I mention in my article) also reminded me that Hamleys in London had one set up as a demo booth back in the day, and it was genuinely a Japanese model, because it was playing Kato Chan & Ken Chan, not JJ & Jeff as it would have been were it the US. Anyone know anything about how and why they were doing that? Was I the only teenage gaming tragic heading there for a quick free game on Saturdays back in the late 80s/early 90s?
  4. Well, looks like I chose a hell of a time to buy an actual Duo R. Then again, who am I kidding - I'll probably try to get one of these too.
  5. Shades A rogue like adventure game where you must escape the Greek underworld in order to purchase some fashionable curtains.
  6. It’s the mix of learning what works with each weapon, and then adjusting your play style around the boons — at first I hated using the close up melee weapons and did badly because I was trying to play as though I had range, but once I switched that up and then adjusted which boon choices I took when they turned up I started to do better with pretty much every run. Doesn’t mean you can’t have ”bad runs” every once in a while*, but does also give you an appreciation for the wider than usual play arc of the game. *eat more fibre, fewer kebabs.
  7. 47 runs in and I finally got my first clear. It really is a matter of matching the weapons and boons intelligently, and then playing to that style. And enjoying every step of the journey (and that conclusion)
  8. As an update to my earlier plans — console arrived, as did my job lot of “junked” Hu Cards and CDs. And everything, bar Power 11 (I’m guessing soccer) works, too! Having a lot of fun exploring a very weird mix of shoot em ups, platformers and semi-incomprehensible Japanese RPGs. Also a surprise inclusion of a SF2 box... that instead contained Space Harrier and the dead copy of Power 11 instead. Nice manual though, and given I’ve got more than a few copies of the various SNES iterations I’m actually happier with Space Harrier anyway! Will keep an eye out on how it runs h
  9. ^This is either way more confidence in my tips than I possess myself, or a sign of how uninspiring this PPV is.

  11. Picked one up (I blame this thread). Screen is OK, controls are very mushy, speakers sound like they’re being amplified through a wet sock. Trying to run anything post 16-bit on it is an exercise in futility, too. Orange colour is nice, mind you. And it was cheap.
  12. Solution: This collection, which might be just SLIGHTLY overpriced: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Amstrad-Collection-Vortex-SP512-JUST-CPC-v2-Amstrad-664-Amstrad-Plus-GX4000-etc/183873794165
  13. Good to know that it’s likely — sold as in working condition but as always there’s an element of risk. Happy to toddle around in terms of game selection. Any other year I’d be in Japan once or twice and able to shop a little more easily, but, well... 2020 and all that.
